Rodeo legend Chris LeDoux is the inspiration for the brand new musical, “One Ride,” which is kicking up plenty of excitement for its national tour beginning at Queens Theatre in the Park. It features 10 remarkably agile dancers, an outstanding six piece band known as the Western Underground and one sensational lead singer/guitarist, Lane Turner.

The dancers offer energetic interpretations of more than a dozen songs. They tell a story of a starry eyed young cowboy who hopes to buck broncos in the modern west. He meets and matches men and women from all corners of the rodeo world. Songs including “Hooked on an Eight Second Ride,” and “It Ain’t the Years, It’s the Miles,” reveal the glamorous and difficult roads a rodeo cowboy travels. Stunning visuals on a huge screen, great costumes and a stylized “bare back bronco” are important tools in the storytelling.

The project is more than a labor of love for creator/director/choreographer Robert Royston and his wife Nicola. Portions of the proceeds are earmarked for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.

Short snip of Chris LeDoux Bio

Chris LeDoux was the rare professional rodeo cowboy who was able to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming a World Champion Bareback Rider in 1976.

Chris LeDoux retired from rodeo in 1980 and was later inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, sealing his place in rodeo history.

Chris was also a successful Grammy nominated country music singer and songwriter who sold over six million albums. Throughout his career as a professional rodeo cowboy, Chris LeDoux collected stories and verse describing the struggles and passion of being a rodeo cowboy and put them to music. He would ride rodeo during the day and perform at local bars at night singing his poignant songs about the cowboy lifestyle.

Once retired from the rodeo, Chris LeDoux focused on his music, turning out thirty six albums. Garth Brooks brought Chris LeDoux to the attention of mainstream country music listeners when he referenced Chris’ music in his song, “Much Too Young (to Feel This Damn Old)” and cited him as an inspiration for his own shows.

Chris LeDoux died tragically young of cancer in March, 2005 leaving a wife and five children. His legacy is one of simple honesty, hard work and the courage to never give up in the pursuit of your dreams. He is the only country music artist who was able to successfully live the life he sang about. To this day, Chris LeDoux represents the epitome of that American icon, the rodeo cowboy.
